Myofunctional Therapy FAQ
-
After a comprehensive exam in which we discuss specific myofunctional disorders and symptoms, I will develop a personalized exercise plan for you. We will meet every 2 weeks for a session that typically lasts from 30-40 minutes. Most people choose to do this virtually as they find it more convenient. I will teach you exercises, we will review previous exercises and discuss how you are doing with therapy, as well as any questions you may have.
-
Therapy usually takes from 6-9 months. Sessions are every 2 weeks and most people have graduated from treatment in 12-15 sessions. Just like any exercise program the more diligent a person is with practicing their exercises, the better their results will be.
-
Exercises are done twice a day, 5 minutes each for a total of 10 minutes per day.
-
Unfortunately myofunctional therapy is not covered by most insurances, but your FSA or HSA card can be used to pay for treatment.
-
The industry average for a comprehensive exam costs from $150-$300 and therapy typically costs from $1200 to $2400 for the entire 12-session therapy program, depending on the practitioner. I am currently offering discounts for new clients. See my services page to learn about my current rates.

I am happy to announce I have opened my small home office in Thornton. I will continue to drive to local (Northern Denver Metro area) clients for their comprehensive functional exams if that is more convenient. Although I do prefer to see my clients in person for their initial exam, it is possible to accomplish the entire process virtually- I’ll send you a kit and have you email or text me the photos and measurements that I need. This works well for my out-of-state clients. After the comprehensive functional exam, it is your choice to do the therapy sessions in person at my home office or virtually. Some of my clients even mix it up depending on their schedule that week!

I usually see clients ages 6 and up. I do offer a habit elimination program for those younger (finger or thumb sucking, pacifier, etc), and I am happy to schedule a visit with children ages 2-5 to offer parents resources, information, and referrals to an airway focused team of dental/health providers. For all children I recommend a parent accompany them to their appointments; I find they are an integral part of therapy’s success, helping to keep kids on track and practicing correctly. Often parents will do treatment with their children, parents who have children with myofunctional disorders often have them as well!

Myofunctional therapy is used prior to and after a tongue tie release to ensure best results. Before the release therapy is used to get you ready for the procedure. We will practice posture for the tongue and stretches to have it ready for surgery. Afterwards, we will work toward even better posture and function, reducing the risk of improper healing, and that proper function of swallowing is achieved. You will also have me to guide you through the entire process. I have had a freunuloplasty myself and have first hand knowledge of the procedure and healing process.
